In November 2022, SOCAR and KazMunayGas (KMG) signed a Master Agreement for the annual transit of 1.5 million tons of Tengiz oil from Aktau to Ceyhan via the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. The first shipment of Tengiz oil arrived at the Sangachal Terminal aboard the President Heydar Aliyev tanker on March 23, 2023.
In March 2024, SOCAR and KMG signed an agreement to increase annual transit volumes, as well as a Memorandum of Strategic Cooperation on the sale and purchase of Kazakh oil.
On January 15, 2025, SOCAR and KMG signed an additional Master Agreement for the annual transit of 240 thousand tons of Kashagan oil, supplementing the existing Tengiz volumes. The first Kashagan shipment, totaling 6 thousand tons, arrived in Baku on January 27, 2025.
Between March 2023 and July 2026, a total of approximately 4.5 million tons of Kazakh oil were transported through Azerbaijan.
